National Get Organized Day

April 25th, 2025

April 26th is National Get Organized Day and Soni Brendle, PLLC believes there’s no better time to bring order to the often overwhelming process of divorce. Organization is not  just about tidy spaces—it’s about creating clarity during one of life’s most challenging transitions.

Here are our top 10 organizational tips to help you navigate your divorce with clarity and confidence:

1. Create a Dedicated Divorce Document Station

Establish a specific area in your home or office where all divorce-related paperwork lives. If you are a paper person, use a file box or cabinet  with clearly labeled folders for financial documents, correspondence with your attorney, court filings, and custody information.  On the other hand, if you prefer digital copies, organize your email and computer filing system (see more on that below) in a way that works well for you.  Having everything in one place prevents the frantic search for important papers before meetings or court appearances.

2. Develop a Financial Snapshot

Before diving into asset division, create a comprehensive financial inventory. List all accounts, properties, investments, debts, and regular expenses. Include account numbers, approximate values, and whether each item was acquired before or during the marriage. This will be invaluable to your attorney and doing some of the work on your own can save you thousands in legal fees spent hunting down information.

3. Establish a Communication System

Create separate folders in your email for divorce-related communication and set up a dedicated notebook or digital document to remember important conversations. Consider using a co-parenting app like Our Family Wizard if children are involved. Organized communication prevents misunderstandings and creates a reliable record if disputes arise.

4. Build Your Support Team Contact List

Compile contact information for everyone supporting you through this process: your attorney, financial advisor, therapist, mediator, and trusted friends or family members. Having this information readily accessible ensures you know exactly who to reach out to when specific needs arise.

5. Create a Clear Calendar System

Divorce involves numerous appointments, deadlines, and custody schedules. Use a dedicated calendar (paper or digital) to track court dates, meetings with your attorney, document submission deadlines, and parenting time. Set reminders several days in advance of important dates to ensure nothing falls through the cracks.

6. Organize Your Digital Life

Change passwords on personal accounts, create backups of important digital documents, and consider setting up new email addresses for personal matters. Take inventory of all shared digital accounts and subscriptions that will need to be separated. Digital organization prevents future access issues and protects your privacy.

7. Prepare a Post-Divorce Budget

Create a realistic budget based on your anticipated post-divorce financial situation. Include all expected income sources and expenses. This organization step helps you negotiate more effectively and transitions you to financial independence with clear expectations.

8. Develop a Self-Care System

Organize specific time blocks dedicated to your physical and emotional wellbeing. Schedule regular exercise, therapy appointments, social connections, and activities that bring you joy. These intentional “appointments with yourself” ensure you’re maintaining your health during a stressful time.

9. Create a Co-Parenting Organization Method

If you have children, establish clear systems for tracking expenses, sharing important information about their activities and needs, and managing the logistics of transitions between homes. Well-organized co-parenting reduces conflict and creates stability for children during uncertainty.

10. Interview Attorneys

There are a lot of divorce attorneys out there and everyone has an opinion on who you should hire.  Come up with a short list of individuals you want to do a consultation with and see who is the right fit for you and your goals.
